The Policing Literacy Initiative is a grassroots education and advocacy group focused on building trust and collaboration between police and disadvantaged communities. PLI is modeled after the Yale Law School Innovations in Policing Clinic. PLI has worked with dozens of volunteers from the Greater Toronto Area to organize events about policing issues, develop unique research projects and create educational materials used by community organizations and law enforcement agencies.
PLI was founded by a group of concerned young leaders who came together in August 2013 to respond to community concerns following the deaths of Trayvon Martin in Florida and Sammy Yatim in Toronto. PLI is entirely driven by volunteers with a passion for equality under the law for all people. Since its inception, PLI has engaged thousands of citizens and police officers in Ontario and abroad.
